Emailing via Elastic Email

Elastic templates can be prepared as "Classic email designer" or as "Raw HTML". Placeholder that appears almost every time is the salutation: {firstname:friend}. This inserts the recipient's first name in the text, if available, or inserts the word "friend" in it, if the first name is not available to Elastic. Other variants, even whole phrases can be used (such as {firstname:und herzlich willkommen}).

Automatically triggered emails

In contrast to promotional campaigns that are sent only occassionally, automatic emails are sent every day according to triggers specific for their recipients.

As of January 2026, there are these types of triggered emails:

  • Welcome
  • Tips
  • Debt reminder
  • Group debt reminder
  • Group archival

Welcome email

We welcome the user immediately after they have registered with us. The message contains some basic info on how to start in the app and a short mention of Premium features. We also support the user to give us feedback easily by replying to that email.

Tips email

This is sent several (14) days after the Welcome message. The email gives more details how to use the app to its potential (circles, transaction types, minimization, categories).

Group debt reminder emails and Debt reminder email

This is automatically sent 32 days after the last activity in the group, if there are still outstanding debts, or on demand (if a Premium user clicks on Remind friends to pay in the group). The message contains details of the debt(s) and link to the group in our web app. This should help group members remember to pay their debts and mark them as settled afterwards. Placeholders used are {group} (group name), {group_link}, {amount}, {debts}, {debtee} (person who is owed), {sender} (person who triggered this email – not necessarily the debtee).

Group archival

Groups are automatically archived after 3 months of inactivity in groups in which all debts are settled, and 6 months in unsettled groups. Placeholders (variables) used in the email text are:

  • {days_inactive}: how many days the group has been without any activity. Activity is any change or edit in the group expect for changing group colour (although it is a change if the group owner initiates it). First, 32 days after the last activity, the group members receive a notification about inactivity. Then, we send out an email. This number will be about 83 or 173 (i.e., 90 or 180 days minus {days_before_archival}).
  • {days_before_archival}: how many days the user has until the group gets archived. We send the email on that many days before the archival. Usually 7 days.
  • {group}: group name
  • {group_link}: web app group link

The emails have slightly different wording based on whether the group debts are settled or not.
